Your microfiber towels are your most important detailing tools. Learn how to wash and care for them so they stay soft and scratch-free.
Microfiber towels are the backbone of any detailing operation. Their split fibers are incredibly effective at trapping dirt and absorbing liquids without scratching the paint. However, if you wash them incorrectly, you can melt the fibers, rendering them useless and potentially dangerous to your clear coat.
Rule number one: never wash your microfiber towels with regular cotton laundry. The microfibers will attract all the lint from your clothes. Wash them in a dedicated load using a specialized microfiber detergent, or a free-and-clear liquid detergent. Avoid powder detergents, as undissolved granules can get stuck in the towels.
Rule number two: NEVER use fabric softener or dryer sheets. These products coat the fibers in lipids, completely destroying their absorbency. Finally, dry your towels on the lowest heat setting possible, or air dry them. High heat will literally melt the microscopic plastic fibers, turning your plush towel into a scratchy rag.
