Matte Paint Care: What You Need to Know

Matte and satin finishes look incredible, but they require a completely different maintenance routine. Here is how to keep them flawless.

Matte and satin paint jobs (or vinyl wraps) have become increasingly popular for their aggressive, stealthy appearance. However, these finishes are notoriously difficult to maintain. The microscopic texture that diffuses light and creates the matte effect is highly susceptible to damage.

The golden rule of matte paint care is: NEVER polish or compound it. Polishing relies on friction to smooth out the clear coat, which will instantly turn a matte finish into a glossy, uneven mess. You must also avoid any traditional car wash soaps or quick detailers that contain waxes or gloss enhancers.

To maintain matte paint, you must use dedicated matte-specific soaps and sealants. If you get a scratch or a stubborn water spot on a matte finish, it cannot be polished out; the panel must be repainted or rewrapped. We highly recommend applying a matte-specific ceramic coating immediately after purchasing the vehicle to provide a durable, easy-to-clean barrier.
